Birding In Nalsarovar


Situated 64 kms south west of Ahmehabad, Nalsarovar is an enoromous lake which is highly attractive for water birds. Nalsarovar is an enoromous lake of 130 sq kms having 360 islands which are important breeding areas for the birds. Nalsarovar was decleared as the bird sanctuary in 1969 with core area of 100 hecters. The major water of lake comes through monsoons at the same time Nalsarovar is fed by two rivers. Nalsarovar is sallow and marshy which attracts numbers of water flocks and wintering cranes. The best time to visit Nalsarovar is from November til february. One can aslo see both Flamingo and three Indian Pelicians. During summer the lake is almost dry, the best season for wintering bird is from December to february and the best way of exploring Nalsarovar is by boat. One can see thousand of Common and Demoiselle cranes during winters There are mixed flocks of Flamingo and resident Sarus Cranes to be seen here. The list of birds seen at Nalsarovar are Painted stork, Asian openbill, black headed, Rufous Tailed Shrike, Rosy Starling and Blue throat, Lagger Flacon, pheased tailed and bronze winged jacanas, Pied Avocet, Eurasian Thick knee, small pratincole, southern grey, blay backed, bulbul, common and large babblers, Zitting cisticola, Graceful plain and Ashy Prinias, white tailed lapwing, common sandpipers, little and temmick's stints, ruff dove, sand Martin, red rumped swallows, indian Courser, Yellow Wattled Lapwing, egrets, black crowned night herons,little grebe, Indian cormoranate, purple heron, black & glossy Ibises, Eurasian spoonbill, greylag purple swamphen, paddy field warbler, white browed wagtails, bay weaver and many more ...........
