Birding In Point Calimere


Located on the east coast of India 350 kms south of Chennai is best known as Kodikkarai or Cape Calimere is a vast area of tidal lagoons, salt pans, mud flats, pools, grasslands and thron forest. Minimum two to three days birding around these area is recommended.

The aves found at this area are Oriental Darter, Little Heron, Western Reef Egret, Black Bittern, Painte Strokj, Black Headed Ibis, Eurasian Spoonbill, Bar headed Goose, Spot Billed Duck, Creasted Honey Buzzard, Bootel Eagles, White Bellied Sea Eagles, Pallid, Montagu's and Eurasian Marsh Harrier, Short Toed Snake Eagles, Jungle BUsh Quail, Barred Buttonquail, Slaty breasted Rail, Slaty legged Crake, Watercock, Great Thick knee, Small Pratincole, Pacific Golden, Grey, Caspian, Little ringed and Kentish Plovers, Black and Bard tailed Godwits, Spotted and common Redshanks, Greenshanks, Marsh, Green, Wood, Terek, Curlew, and Board Billed Snipes, Red & Great Knots, Little, Temminck's, long toedand Red necked Stints, Ruff, Red necked Phalarope, Heuglin's Pallas, Brown headed and Slender billed Gulls, White winged, Gull billed, caspian, common, Roseate, Little and Large creasted, Lesser Creasted and Sandwich Terns, Chestnut winged, common Hawk, Indian Grey Bellied and Plaintive Cuckoos, Grey and Indian Nightjars, Blue tailed bee eaters, Eurasian Wryneck, indian Bushlark, Ashy crowned Sparrow Larks, Oriental Sky larks, Yellow bellied babblers, Pied and Orange headed Thrush, Richard's, Paddyfield and Blyth's Pipits, White browed wagtails, Pale billed Flowerpecker, Purple rumped, Loten's Sunbird, Indian Silverbills and many more....
